Nothing signals the end of the growing season like fried green tomatoes. While we had the pleasure of enjoying fried green tomatoes in New Orleans a few years ago, we only grew salad tomatoes until this year. Cherry tomatoes simply don’t do the job! However, 2020 has been a year full of change so why not this also? Our household has jumped onto the fried green tomato wagon and y’all… WHAT THE HECK HAVE WE BEEN DOING WITH OUR LIVES?! They are So. Damn. GOOD!

How to Make Fried Green Tomatoes
- Slice tomatoes 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick (no more than 1/2″ or you really won’t like yourself; trust me! Made the mistake and it ain’t good!). Location: far left.
- Scoop flour onto a plate. Location: place to the right of tomatoes.
- Whisk one egg with a splash of dairy (the creamier the better but whatever you have will do just fine). Location: place to the right of the plate of flour.
- Mix bread crumbs, Panko breading, and seasoning on a plate. Location: place to the right of all other ingredients. *congrats! You are prepped and have made a super sexy assembly line!
- In a small to medium skillet, pour vegetable oil to roughly 1/2″ deep. Please note, the smaller the pan the less oil you will have to use.
- Heat oil over medium heat. Not sure if it’s ready? Wet one finger with just a few drops of water. Flick the water into the oil. If it crackles then your oil is hot enough to cook with. If not? Take another drink of your adult beevy and keep vibing with Stevie or Terry Gross.
- Dip tomatoes into flour to coat. Then dip the tomatoes into milk and egg mixture. Dredge in breadcrumbs to completely coat.
- Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. Drain them on paper towels.
