Raised Garden Beds (aka Planter Boxes) are a labor of love. Did we know this when we started building them in April? No. Are we thrilled anyhow? Yes!
So let’s talk basic steps:
- Level the area
- Save the excess soil for later
- Snag manure from your ponies (don’t have ponies, get ponies! Kidding- go ask a pony friend to hook you up!)
- Put down landscape fabric using landscaping staples and cuss a little (or a lot)
- Reclaim amazing wood from generous local friend
- Drag feet a little because you are tired.
- Now build the damn things and have a photoshoot with the beer you will drink afterwards #sorrynotsorry!
- Next? Line boxes with landscape fabric, load with soil/compost/manure mix, find more soil, whisper sweet nothings to our veggie starts, wait so you can plant them.
What You’ll Need (Makes One 8’X4’X2′ Raised Bed)
- (1) 4″x4″X8′ Post (cut into four 2′ sections)
- (16) 2″x6″x8′ Boards
- (64) #14 x 3″ Construction Lag Screw (Exterior, Torx/Star Drive)
You may be wondering why I don’t mention what kind of boards and posts to get. Here’s the deal; I don’t want to make any barriers. Depending on budget and how permanent you want your garden beds, you can go pressure treated or cedar.
