Today, we will teach you How to Make An Earwig Trap with two common household ingredients. You can be on your way to being an earwig killer in less than five minutes!
Last year we almost lost all 30 of our basil plants to earwigs (we almost didn’t have any Avocado Pesto last year!). It became my gardener’s life mission to become a prolific earwig killer!
What You Will Need to Make a Large Batch of Earwig Traps
- 1 Cup Cooking Oil (use the cheap stuff like Vegetable Oil; save the olive oil for sauteeing!)
- 1/4 Cup Soy Sauce (finally a reason to use all those saved packets!)
- Pour cooking oil into a measuring cup separately and divide among 6 containers*
- Repeat with soy sauce.
What You Will Need: Single Earwig Trap
- 1/4 Cup Cooking Oil (use the cheap stuff like Vegetable Oil; save the olive oil for sauteeing!)
- 3 Soy Sauce Packets or roughly 1 tsp Soy Sauce (finally a reason to use all those saved packets!)
- Pour cooking oil into a measuring cup separately and divide among 6 containers*
- Repeat with soy sauce.
Why Separately? Oil and soy sauce do not mix together. So, if you do end up measuring them all in the same measuring cup, just be prepared to try to part out your mixture evenly and insert a few choice words.
*I used a combination of aluminum cans that I cut the tops off of and folded under. As well as plastic containers (those with lost lids, plastic drink bottles cut down to size, and old yogurt type containers). The beauty of these repurposed containers; just chuck it in the garbage at the end of the season.
Where and When to Place Earwig Traps
Set out in the evening in the area where you are having problems with earwigs. We suggest against a building wall or raised bed wall (something else that will make easy access for the earwigs to get into the container). Come back in the morning and be prepared to be disgusted amazed!
